THE CAPSULE BAG #13.

capsule bage number what?

With chilly temperatures starting to set in, I thought it was time to start incorporating a bit of fur somewhere here on succhisimples. The week has been pretty bog-standard with the past month, so this is more of a monthly favorites than a weekly Capsule Bag, but why let tradition go to waste? Here’s what I’ve been loving for the past week (er, month).

Benefit Boi-ing Concealer in 04

My skin’s been pretty blemish-prone as of late, so to combat the telltale marks about my face region I’ve been digging into what’s left of this little pot with my Bobbi Brown Ultra-Fine Liner brush (perfect for pinpoint concealing à la Lisa Eldridge). The reason? It’s pretty much the only concealer in my stash that’s the correct match for my skin at the moment, so this is more of a desperation pick than a this-stuff’s-fantastic selection. It’s good, but not my absolute favorite in the way of blemish concealing. Though it’s supposed to be heavy-duty stuff, I find it’s a bit sheerer than I’d like on application, so it takes quite a bit of building up, but it does the job.

MAC Lip Pencil in Spice

I went into my local MAC store recently looking for the perfect my-lips-but-slightly-more-kylie-jenner-esque lip liner that was still quite close to my natural lip shade (think a bit more rosy/brown), and this fit the bill perfectly. It’s surprisingly creamy and has great lasting power, all the while giving you that notorious “porn star lip” look coined by Estée from Essiebutton once topped off with some gloss or a lipstick of choice. Your lips, but pouty and fabulous. Simples.

MAC Viva Glam V Lipstick

This was quite the popular shade back in the day around the blogosphere, so on the same MAC trip I figured it was time for me to bite the bullet and see for myself what all the hype was about. Now I get it. I can’t stress enough what a gorgeous shade it is; sheer, nude-y, slightly shimmery without being over-the-top. Where it really excels, though, is in layering; it looks stunning to top off lip pencils (esp. the aforementioned Spice) or lipsticks that are a bit more reddish or brown, muting down the warmth of the color underneath a notch and giving a much more sophisticated air. Think cherry-on-top goodness that pulls everything together. Do you need this in your life? Absolutely.

theBalm Betty-Lou Manizer

Let me tell you now, this will be your best friend in the way of beachy, glowing skin. It’s deep enough in shade to be a bronzer but has a gorgeous kick of shimmery luminescence to it that nixes the need for extra highlighter (although if you’re anything like me, you add extra highlighter on top anyway because let’s face it, you’re addicted to the stuff) but doesn’t give that disco-ball, this-chick-got-glittered look. If you typically shy away from shimmering bronzers, have no fear; the only detectible glimmering that transfers to the skin applies so beautiful it looks like you’re glowing, not sparkling. Betty-Lou saves the day.

DSC_0021The week has seen the introduction of more than a few products as the result of birthday binge-shopping (haul to come; keep your peepers peeled) so I’ve been trialling quite a few makeup bits since buying. First up, my base collection has added a new member to the family. Please welcome the oh-so-professional POREfessional primer from Benefit. This actually happens to be my first full-size product from the brand, and I have to say, I’m beyond impressed. First  of all, a non-silicon-y primer that manages to fill in pores while smoothing the skin and prepping for the rest of the day’s face paint? Sold. You had me at hello. This baby lives up to its name; pores are minimized when first applied and then do their own disappearing act as soon as foundation comes to play. While it is more expensive than many drugstore offerings, it doesn’t break the bank the way the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer does (review here). I actually stole this Dior Nude Tan Bronzer in 003 Cinnamon from my mum’s makeup collection, and we’ve had quite the love affair so far. Silky smooth formula, minimal shimmer, and the perfect amount of glow. Because I have skin on the darker side of the spectrum, I often find that my beloved Nars Laguna bronzer is a bit too light to impart the sunkissed glow I’m always after, so I love this darker shade to give a bit more of a punch. It’s also great applied with a fluffy brush like the Real Techniques blush brush just under the cheekbones and blended up to give a hint of contour. It also comes in quite a few colors if this shade is a little too dark (or light) for you. I’ve been obsessed with the Anastasia Skinny Brow Wiz in Ebony since opting for a bit of a stronger brow in last week’s post. I won’t rave on about this since I’ve reviewed it here, but let me say this: She’s a beaut. Last up, I finally picked up YSL’s Glossy Stain in the shade Corail Aquatique (no. 7). This was my first foray into their range, and I want them ALL. I kid you not, these are bloomin’ fantastic. They go on like the most buttery gloss and start to “set” to more of a balm texture that feels cushiony on the lips and moisturizes all day long. These also layer better than any gloss/liquid lipstick I’ve ever tried; as soon as the product sets, you can keep applying coats until you’re happy with the intensity. This shade, in particular, is a gorgeous peach/coral (can you tell?) that doesn’t lean so orange that it makes your teeth look white, but is a stunning spring/summer shade. Consider me obsessed.

THE CAPULE BAG, #9.

DSC_0253No but seriously, it’s Oscar night. For as long as I can remember, tonight has been the one night I look forward to the most every year (aside from Christmas Eve, because who doesn’t love going to bed dreaming about gifts in the morning?). Thus, the week’s makeup bag has been seriously lacking because I’ve been focused on… other things. Like watching the last few films before the show, prepping my couch for viewing, and dealing with more excitement than the nominees themselves. First up, the Oscar goes to Chanel’s Vitalumière Aqua Foundation in B40 for best performance by a foundation in a leading role. Versatile, easy, perfect. Covers everything and feels like you have nothing on your face. For best performance by a beauty tool in a supporting role, Tweezerman travel tweezers. Gets rid of pesky hairs on your face. Need I say more? It was a tie between best performance by a lip product this week, featuring the  in Rimmel Apocalips in Stargazer atop Revlon’s lipstick in Jungle Peach (review to come). And they’d like to thank the Academy….

CAPSULE #7-1

CAPSULE #7-2

CAPSULE #7-3The week has seen the disappearance of foundation from the makeup menu (per chef’s orders to simplify, simplify, simplify.); my skin has been the site of an overload of Pompeii-like eruptions all of a sudden. Which reminds me. Anyone else beyond excited to see John Snow in Pompeii? That beautiful, beautiful man… But I digress. Case in point being, I’ve been far too lazy to faff around with layer after layer of foundation and concealer afterwards, even though my skin would probably look a lot better than it has this week if I did. In light of that, I’ve been trying to focus on giving it some extra TLC at night with my Tarte Maracuja Oil instead of my usual night cream. This one’s just a sample size from Sephora (hint: use code MARACUJA at checkout on the Sephora website for this sample); I’m debating between this and the Pai Rosehip Oil when I commit to a full size, but this has really helped heal those pesky blemishes. I’ve been relying heavily on my Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette (review here) to inject in some much-needed glow. This one was limited edition, but you can get the individual shades except “Incandescent Light” here.  I’ve especially been loving Radiant Light on the cheekbones with Nars Laguna Bronzer to welcome Sister Spring and sunshine. I’ve had the Sigma E30 Pencil Eye Brush forever now, but I’ve only just gotten into using it on the daily with my battered-up version of the Stila Kitten Eyeshadow. As you can probably tell, this thing has been through hell and back; I have dropped it (possibly more than twice, but I refuse to confess to anything), broken it, and put it back together more than I care to mention, but it’s still a gorgeous highlight shade and works well in the inner corners using the brush. There you have it! The week, in review.

THE CAPSULE BAG #6.

the capsule bag #6Don’t say it. I know what you’re thinking, this is the ugliest blog photo in the history of man, but A) I haven’t posted anything since last Wednesday, so there goes my schedule and B) I’ve been so busy the only time I’ve been able to take some blog photos is at nine at night with worse lighting than the first Twilight film. Shameful? Absolutely. It had to be done. Apologies for the late weekly favorites post, but here are… last week’s loves. Whoopsie. Here we go.

Zuzu Luxe Mineral Bronzer in D-28

My mum actually picked this up from the beauty aisle in Whole Foods (who’d have thought?) and, as it was getting dusty in the back of her drawer, I took it upon myself to spread the makeup love to this little pot of sun and ohmygosh. I lurves. It’s quite the intensely pigmented bronzer and much more shimmery than my all-timer, Nars Laguna, so I do use a light hand, but for no-highlighter days (which almost never, ever happen here at succhisimples.) this has been my go-to.

Maybelline Baby Lips in Grape Vine

For no-makeup days when lips need the extra boost of TLC and a flush of color, I’ve been swiping this bad boy onto them smoochers. Easy, breezy, and with less pigmentation than their “Cherry Me” offering, it’s great for those who don’t want too much of a flush but still love a berry tint.

Nyx Love in Paris Palette

This is one of the most adorable palettes in the universe, being that it’s smaller than my palm, and comes handy for days when I don’t want to break out seven different palettes to get all the shades I need. It’s naked, in a smaller, much more French version. Need I say more?

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit in Honey

My love affair with the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer is still going strong, but my skin hasn’t been the best lately with all the stress it’s been battling, so Bobbi’s got them breakouts taken care of with her heavy duty but not heavy-looking cover-all. Say that five times fast.

And there you have it! Last week’s favorites, this week… Simples. Which makes no sense at all, but I promise to be back on schedule with a new post (hint hint, Lorac Pro Palette Review) this Wednesday. Don’t forget to check back then! What have you been loving lately?

THE CAPSULE BAG #4.

the capsule bag #4

the capsule bag #4-2

the capsule bag #4-3The week in beauty has been through a bit of re-discovery with some new bits thrown in after my previous haul. I’ve done an entire post about my new purchases here, if you’d like to take a look. On the bases front, I’ve been sampling Smashbox’s CC cream like nobody’s business. This stuff is uber-creamy and blends in effortlessly when paired with my long-time brush lover, the Real Techniques Buffing brush. I know I rave on and on about the Nars One Night Stand cheek palette, so what’s one more post featuring it as the centerpiece of my affections? Maybe too much. Definitely too much. In short, I made up my mind long ago to never give in to the hype surrounding Nars Orgasm, thinking it would be too sheer against my medium/tan skin, but I’m so in love with this shade that I’ve forsaken every other blush I own for the past week in favor of this golden peach tint. See the review here. The Tarte Aqualilies Smooth Operator Setting Powder was featured in the haul post linked above, and it’s been great to keep my T-Zone shine free all day. Let me know if you’d like to see a review on this one below. Lastly, I’ve been getting back into eyeshadow with a bang lately, and the Wet N’ Wild for Beauty Benefits Ultimate Expressions Palette is absolutely stunning. A gift from a certain best friend, the gold shade packs a serious punch with some shimmer to match that of my all-time favorite shadow, MAC woodwinked. (If you’re interested in seeing some of my other MAC shadow favorites, take a look at this post.) And there we have it! All the products I’ve been loving for the past week, simples.

Long Black Road-Electric Light Orchestra

… And here we are. It’s the last of the fourteen weeks for this blog hop as 2013 comes to a close, so I won’t bore you by droning on and on about this week’s pick. I’ve been loving listening to the American Hustle soundtrack (which is incredible, by the way) as a little 70’s throwback, and the song Long Black Road? Yes. I’m obsessed. It’s not for everyone, but I do love listening to it while jogging (I’m a bit of a sucker when it comes to 70’s and 80’s music…). I can’t believe I actually managed to do every single post in the blog hop; I’ve been quite busy but I’m happy I stuck with it and did all fourteen. Wishing you all a very happy New Year’s tonight :)

Baby, it’s Cold Outside.

Hello everyone! Another quickie post today on my recent favorite song pick of the week. With Christmas fast approaching, we’ve all been humming caroling tunes in the shower (or holding a full-on performance in the bath), so I wanted to mention a Christmas tune for you all this week. I know, everyone has a favorite, and mine happens to be “Baby, it’s Cold Outside.” Ohmygosh. I love. That. Song. We’ve all watched Elf (I should hope) and have heard Zoeey Deschanel’s silky voice crooning it from the Gimbel’s shower while inadvertently being accompanied by Will Ferrell, so of course that was the only version I could possibly think of to link up here. Suffice it to say I’ve been singing this one since before Halloween in preparation.

Now, onto the Blogmas front, apologies for my lack of posting! I’ve been swamped with work for my finals coming next week, but I promise I will have my post up by tomorrow. And don’t forget to follow the host blog of this blog hop, Beauties Unlocked. If you haven’t already entered my giveaway yet, please do so below! What’s your top Christmas song?

Haim-Don’t Save Me

So a few weeks ago, I’m sitting with a cup of earl grey in sweatpants and my favorite socks, watching one of my favorite shows on the planet, Saturday Night Live, when up on the screen pops an itty bitty notice that says in massive, bold letters, NOVEMBER 23: JOSH HUTCHERSON AND HAIM. So yeah, I guess you could say I flipped out (just a little). I did a little dance. Because Haim? Please and thank you. I know I’ve gone on and on about them, but honestly those girls are so good. If you haven’t heard of them, you’ve probably been living under a rock for the past few months… I jest. They’re this beyond-cool trio of sisters from California with killer style, both musically and in fashion. Very unique on the whole. Anyway, this sounds like the beginning of a love letter to the band, so I’ll stop my fangirling and just tell you how I’m beyond obsessed with their song “Don’t Save Me”. Don’t forget to get your bunny on and join the hop (see what I did there?:) over on the host blog, Beauties Unlocked here.

14 WEEKS OF MELODIES #8.

bloghopbutton_zps0d768d38Lorde-Tennis Court

The past week has been really stressful, with school being more hectic than normal, but never fear. Lorde has me covered. I’m literally obsessed with this chick. No joke. Incredible voice, stunning, cool rocker-chic style. Love. I’ve especially been loving the song Tennis Court whilst doing my best to try to get through piles and piles of books. I hate that feeling of being so overwhelmed by everything that you start to feel helpless, like nothing you could possibly do will change anything, and unfortunately I’ve had enough of that going around lately to supply the whole rest of the world. And you know how, when you start to feel that sense of hopelessness coming up that you just have to stop everything and somehow you realize that you’ve spent over an hour doing absolutely nothing? Or it could be just me. The point is, Lorde, you and your crooning got me through a pretty rough spot. Thanks a bunch.
